The knife fighting stance can be used effectively in all three ranges of knife combat, including:

Long range - This is the farthest distance of knife fighting where you can only cut your opponent’s hand or wrist flexor. The hammer or saber knife grips are ideal for this range of knife combat.

Intermediate range - At this distance you are close enough to cut the mid to upper portion of the opponent’s arm (from his wrist flexor to his biceps). The hammer or saber grips are still the most preferred grips for this distance of engagement.

Close Quarter range - At this distance, you are close enough to stab the opponent’s body with either the ice pick grip or modified ice pick grips. Other secondary close-quarter combat (CQC) tools can also be applied (i.e., head butt, biting tactics, elbow strikes, etc). Close-quarter knife fighting can also take place on the ground. Keep in mind that ground fighting with edged weapons is a treacherous task reserved for only the most skilled knife fighter.
